How to Win the Support of Your Boss?

a question arised in one fine morning...kept myself alone for some time with closed eyes and asked again the same question..rewinded several dialogues from my past like 'boss is ultimate', 'his word is final', 'whatever he tells is right', 'sir knows the thing', 'i am the authority, u r not', 'do it, no more questions', 'i am known to boss, do u?', 'i complained to boss, he calls u', 'as the phase of life changes, the adoptations skills to be developed', 'without my sign, u will not get it'..goes on...after a hour of thought i got some answers that is somewhat difficult for me to follow but not impossible..i found a article which matched my answers almost is given below:

The art of management requires that you spread your influence upwards through the organization, as well as downwards. If you want to achieve results and get on, you will need to gain the support of your superior. Most bosses can quickly detect flattery and manipulation-but there are other more acceptable strategies that will enhance your upward influence and win for you the continued backing of your superiors...

1. Support your boss at all times.
If you give your boss loyalty and support, you can normally expect such support in return. You can make your support obvious in various ways. Remember: in the wash-up, you exist to support your boss.

2. Take a long-term view.

To prove that you're worthy of your boss's support, you'll need to win that support over time. It will require your continuing efforts to develop a positive working relationship. Be persistent and patient in working towards that goal.

3. Make sure your boss notices what you do.

Find ways to show your boss your strengths, your abilities, and your willingness to accept responsibility. Being recognized as being very good at what you do is the best way to stand out from the crowd and win the support of your boss. Think about how you sell your ideas, present information at meetings, collect and collate information, interact with your boss and others, and so on. What differentiates you from your colleagues? And is your boss noticing? Consider providing your boss with a monthly one-page report of your achievements. Keep copies of those reports to use at performance appraisal time.

4. Try making your ideas your boss's ideas.

Present your proposals in such a way that your boss can contribute to them and thus feel some 'ownership' of them. Management consultant Derek Rowntree offers this advice:

o Show your boss how to gain something of value from what you are proposing.

o If your boss makes suggestions that are at all practicable, incorporate them into your proposal.

o If they are not practicable, get your boss talking about the implications until it is obvious to everyone they are not.

o If your boss offers a better proposal altogether, praise it; and you be the one to offer suggestions.
o If the only way of getting your ideas adopted is to let your boss get the credit for them, you may sometimes decide to do so for the sake of the proposal. The key is to win over your boss by working with him or her. Gain your boss's confidence in your ability to create and develop your worthwhile proposals cooperatively. Let your boss appear to have played the major part.

5. Tackle conflict constructively.

From time to time, conflict with your boss is inevitable. By all means disagree if you have a case, but don't dispute authority (the ultimate decision rests with the boss) or incite confrontation in the presence of others. It's smarter to retire to fight another day. Never beat your boss into the ground. If your boss loses face, you'll end up losing more. Remember, 'in the end, the boss is always right'.

6. Gain a reputation for solving problems.

Keep minor problems off your boss's desk; solve these yourself. If your boss must hear about problems you're having, make sure the news comes from you first. Never let your boss be embarrassed by having to admit ignorance of a problem or crisis in your area. Whenever something is seriously wrong, tell your boss and indicate what you're doing to remedy the situation. Make it clear that you have learned from the experience and that the error is unlikely to happen again.

7. Be open, frank and honest.

Your boss needs to rely on you, to believe in you, if you are to gain his or her support. The faintest suspicion that you are not being perfectly honest will cause the boss to have doubts about trusting you again. Gain a reputation for honesty and straight-shooting.

8. And remember...

o Don't wait for your ship to come in; swim out and meet it. Look for opportunities to impress your boss and win support.

o Learn to play office politics. If you find such games disagreeable, remember that those who play them well may soon be your superiors.

o When your boss makes a mistake, tread lightly.

o Observe the chain of command. Never go over your boss's head.

o You'll gain your boss's respect if you refrain from spreading gossip or putdowns about colleagues.
o Help your boss look good if you want to win real support.

o Finally, heed James Cribbin's advice: 'Avoid crying on their shoulders, stepping on their toes, twisting their arms, and breaking their hearts.'

SAMBALPUR and HIRAKUD DAM - a discovery..

"Among the girls i met, why i loved Jessi?" hero Naga chaitanya asked himself..no wonder.it's an universal question that every love boy of this world asks himself or his girl friend at some phase of his life...i paused the movie for a second and checked time..11-3-2010..2AM..oh! it's just another 2 hours to catch the train..set the alarm for 3AM. pressed play and gone to continue 'emi mayam chesavu'..nice film..arrahman's score took me deeply into the love tale of director goutham memon..nice to watch the screenplay and dialogue..film finished with happy ending as i expected. "get ready boyz..let's go to hirakud..auto will be leaving by 4AM"..sent the SMS to all those 8 friends via way2sms.com..yes..i am going to sambalpur for a tour along with my classmates..it is jagan who initiated the idea and others agreed...checked the time..it's exactly 3AM. oh GOD i forget to sleep last night..

At 4AM all gathered at the birla hall and left for rourkela rly stn to catch the sambaleshwari exp..it came at exactly by 4.45AM..we got seats too in the general compartment..after frequent stops at all stns, the train reached Sambalpur by 9AM..what a train yaar? it took 4 hours for just 150 kms..

SAMBALPUR..yes..this is the town we planned to visit..what is the special in it? that's what we wanted to discover..i heard of sambalpur university, sambalpur folk songs and dance..jatin my room mate who is from this region told about this place much..but from here only we can go to hirakud, the place where world's longest dam is built by our engineers in 1954..also the railway bridge over mahanadhi here affected manytimes in rainy seasons..the tata-alleppey train once took me via nagpur due to that bridge and the river overflow..

Sambalpur stn is neat and clean..other station from this region should follow them..took a auto and first reached Sambaleswari Temple..14th century temple believed to be powerful..situated at bank of river Mahanathi..but with few devotees..we entered the temple after foot and hand wash ..with 2 coconuts..a white gopuram with mesmerising front sculptures refreshed our minds and we looked each other, shared a smile.."we came to right place"...where is the murthi? once asked ourselves and followed a woman who walked with great devotion and purity..wanted to see her face which is covered with saree..she might me near 50 but what a thejas on her face..that comes by YOG only..how could she get it? she may be Bhakthi Yogi..a local of sambalpur. i concluded. at one place she stopped, lightened her neyvilakku (ghee lamp) and looked at her left side with closed eyes with folded hands..i moved forward to her right and looked at the direction where she looked..wow..there is a small room under exactly that white Gopuram(tower)..filled with darkness..lot of ghee lamps..and murthy (idol) is covered with yellow saree with turmeric paste..all moved thro that small entrance into that room..there is sufficient place for some 10 people to stand..i gave coconut to pandit who took it without any question..after regular formalities he returned one half with flowers and kumkum and asked me to kneel down..he touched my forehead with turmeric..my ego for a second surrendered to that place and i forget myself..closed my eyes..opened the third one..the purity of that place occupied my self..suddenly my self start to flourish under some rhythmic waves..this feeling i used to get after a hour of meditation only..how could i get it within seconds here..what is here?..i asked my SELF..but it was still under cosmic rain..gone to the state which i usually call 'the perfect state of mind'..anandha..that is the name..opened the eyes and searched the place from left to right..top to bottom..all r filled with complete darkness..no ventilation..but enough oxygen to meditate..the idol shape is not very much clear..but the smell of ghee, turmeric with flowers and coconut water made that small room a place worth for doing deep meditation..purity..complete purity..no germs can reach that place..wow..this is what the science of purity which was researched by our yogis for thousands of years..the 'REAL' research which benefits common man..that's the science of yoga..all walk of life is yoga..that room tells that it's not only body and the mind, the envirnment they r in first important for attaining state of samadhi..gracefully i recollected the theories of what i learned from my gurus and masters and touched my face with both my hands..the radiating hands made a closed loop with my third eye and i came out of that my favourite world where i wanted to be always in...i asked jagan "do u feel any difference?".."no air flow here. let's go out" he told and left the room..i stood there for a minute and felt my negatives all cleaned..i touched my waist where my most of the negatives stored, felt free...the water of mahanadhi is enriched with charge..positive charge..the reservoir of mahanadhi's hirakud dam is surrounded by hills with dense forests which is not polluted till now..i tasted the water..the water is more energetic..the water level under the temple and bank of river is high..the tower does the work of receiving more cosmic rays from the universe and pumps it under..so the cosmic cloud-tower-earth-and the water makes flow path..and when the piece of emf induced magnet,the human body, moves in that charged pole, the rich positive takes away the negatives..known takes more and the unknown also gets use of it..also there might be some magnetic material under it or else some special stones were preserved..whatever the reason may be that place have some difference..there is a science which is called mystery here..mystery means that the thing which could not be understood...i remembered one dialogue from the film 'kung fu panda', master tell disciple,"yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, today is gift..that's why it is called present"..

we all 9 came out, pictured the views in the canon camera..and left for hirakud dam via ring road..auto driver asked 300 the trip..we agreed without wasting time, because we have to catch the hatia-yeswantpur by 1.40PM to return..he took us to the NH and took left turn..i stopped the driver and asked why don't u cross the river and go the burla end of dam..he told that is more distance, so he will charge more..all said we have no time..all agreed to go hirakud end of dam..yes, the dam is built by connecting burla town and hirakud..after crossing river at burla side, sambalpur university is situated and that is quite a nice town..hirakud side is where Hindalco (aluminium company) is situated which is making use of the reservoir water for thermal power generation and aluminium producer from ores that is much mined from this region mainly from Koraput mines (bauxite mines)..small silent town with few shops and a police station..our auto climbed to a upside hill and reached the dam site..police who guarded there took some tens to allow us to have a view of the dam..got out of the vehicle and seen the scene which is unbelievable site..water everywhere..i couldn't see the boundry of reservoir..the auto driver told that this is some 250km distance from here to find the other side...also he told due to terrorised world, this place is with more seurity..in his boyhood days, he used to roam here with his friends with out any difficulties..i went to a lady in uniform (may be a women SI) and asked her permission to cross over the check post and have a glimpse of dam ..she looked at me with a deep look and shaken her head..that is the gesture of the indian police. i moved on to a hall, contructed by facing the dam..at the centre of the hall, there is a statue of the man's just head pose only..guessing that he may be leader of the country..but the chief engineer..shocked..this is the first place where i have seen a statue for a engineer in the site for his memory..his name is Tirumale Iyengar who along with some 50 engineers with available resources and technology built the dam within 6 years..balaji told that this dam project was the nehru's first project and worlds longest one..all 50 engineers name were engraved in brass plates in that hall..some photos of engineers and nehru also placed there..the map of the dam..spill view, hydro power station view also kept there..some 270MW power is produced there..we then went to the tower built to view the birds view..that is up hill at the top..lighthouse like the one called minar..we went up by steps by paying rs 2 per head..from there we had a beautiful scene of the dam and the surroundings clearly..the flow of air refreshed us...wanted to stay there for a while..vamsi took many photos and koti took video of it eventhough that is prohibited there..the top stand was powered by a motor and the floor was rotating..nice experience... then came down to the dam and travelled to see the spill location where some 10 gates and spill ways with electric crane. we had a look from a distance away, due to security reasons..the radious on the spill path attracted me and had some discussion on fluid dynamics with balaji..the spill side of the dam is not with water..auto driver told that during rainy season they open the spill and we can see more water this side and it will go to cuttact and meet bay of bengal..other seasons, canals are used to distribute the water for agro, household and industries..we all tired finally..decided to leave for station..time was 12.30pm..driver reached the station at 1.15pm..entered a hotel nearl by..but afraid by seeing the size of rice they served there..we came out and took some fruits..entered station and found a railway canteen which is nicely maintained by a Punjabi guy..we got a lunch and filled our stomach...some gone to have a look at sambalpuri girls (sambalpuri girls have some special fame here..i don't know the reasons..i have to ask Jatin) ...ravi went to reservation counter for his tickets to hometown trips..balakrishna was cracking jokes..gangadhar was accompanying..shince was wrestling with vamsi..i went for buying some grapes to eat..by the time train came..we returned peacefully to rourkela..when entered hostel, i felt so fresh..and decided that i will take my wife to this devotional and romantic journey..she will definitely enjoy this and my son too...i talked with my wife over phone but didn't tell about the tour..i will describe her in the next direct meet especially about the temple and it's effects..

Aerodynamics of shuttlecock in badminton game..

Eversince I return from the Robozone competitions, my mind was screening some pictures. The boats which sailed on the water consist of just 2 are more motors, wires and a switch controller with power supply..but what made the difference with the performance of those toys is the DESIGN..design of those structure which is based on Fluid mechanics principles. Though there was so much about mechatronics , but the Design of structures concerned me a lot…my mind got connected to the movie which is showed by my INNER friend who was trying to recalling buoyancy and dynamics principles from the memory and explaining my mind about the importance of DESIGN. Unlike other days, my mind was pleasant and cherishing mood. I returned with my friends balaji, sai, Subramanian and balakrishna who left in half way to attend group discussion on “whether 2.5 million doller deal of procuring aircraft carrier from US is very much important in this recession hit global economy scenario or not”.

While entering my hostel room in the first floor 31^st room of birla hall, my eyes gone to spy the game of badminton which usually played in the down floor under the flood lights but today it looked different. My thought waves all together targeted the shuttlecock which was receiving repeated hitting. So several questions born like this:

1. What are all the factors affecting the speed, time, direction and the path of the shuttlecock?

2. Why always the shuttlecock turns its sides immediately after the hit and takes the ‘cock lead first’ and why the difference in time for such turns by varying hit power?

3. What will happen

a. If the cone surface is completely sealed without ventilation?

b. If the racket’s non-hitting side is also sealed without ventilation?

c. If the cone is removed and game is played with only spherical ‘cock’?

d. If the racket’s net is replaced with plain sheet of any other materials?

I studied the principles there itself and got some answers..and gone to net to confirm myself. And I got an article which gave me the entire ‘Aerodynamics’ calculation of the object in trajectory which is informative and mind awakening…on solid mechanics we discuss later please..till then enjoy the simple aerodynamics application… just read the link below..
